Nelson Mandela’s Rainbow Governance

It is time for Africa to follow Nelson Mandela’s foot steps. The example he set for governing a diverse nation arguably stands as his most important contribution to African development. Mandela was a standard bearer for reconciliation governance.

Madiba presided over the transition from a divided South Africa to a reconciled South Africa. He resisted the temptation to use his power to settle scores with the white population who once oppressed colored South Africans. Like a statesman, he used power to unite instead of divide. This simple choice makes a world of difference when applied in ethnically diverse nations such as in Africa.

Wise leaders understand that the pendulum of power swings back and forth. Today’s minorities could easily become tomorrow’s majority. Today is my turn, and tomorrow will be yours. In this endless oscillation of power, it is better to tip the scales of justice in favor of mercy and reconciliation. Besides, one day your standard of judgement will be applied to you and your people.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate :
I am the captain of my soul.
