“Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music. The idea for this project came from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people“. This is how Playing For Change describes itself. But, what if it is more than that?
Years ago, when I discovered their cover of “Stand By Me”, I couldn’t stop smiling. Then, I came across their cover of “Redemption Song”. As a huge fan of Bob Marley, usually when it comes to singing one of his songs, I have no pity for the singer. Whoever it is, only one artist can sing Bob Marley, and it’s Bob Marley himself; just like with Kassav’, of whom I am also a devout follower. But Playing for Change is an exception. What the Playing for Change cover did was add messages and spirits to the rhythm and lyrics.
For 4 minutes, the singers, featuring Stephen Marley, brought Bob Marley back from the dead. So, I watched other videos, “Imagine”, “One Love”, “Chanda Mama”, and I ended up buying their first two albums on iTunes.
Today, the movement is global. Supporting musicians and music education across the world, Playing for Change spreads an inspiring message through their music, helping us to move forward as a human race, one heart and one song at a time.
