Afropolitain #4 – Ascension – Print

There has been a lot of talk about global warming lately. As a last glimpse of the long-awaited catastrophe, Mother nature took care of reminding us who was the solely mistress of the planet’s fate by freezing western countries into the coldest period seen in a long time. Yet elders will say that there is nothing more normal than a cold winter, it’s common sense.
Another phenomenon has insidiously developed in parallel. Africa has become trendy, not an ephemeral fashion but really in the driving seat of the trend. It started with rhythmic jolts in pop music, then a whole piece of ready-to-wear inspired patterns, textures and colors of the continent to end up winning a movie on the big screen in 2018, Black Panther. The pragmatists would recognize in this a reversal of values, the realists see the nature taking back its rights. Thus, this issue will focus on the disruption of codes such as this figure of professional sports who keeps preciously her textbooks in her gymbag or the international star of Soul music who lives by Africa time for about ten years. Whether we are talking about incubators for women’s entrepreneurship in Congo, a black opera singer in the middle of Broadway, or the living frescoes in Berlin galleries, little by little Africa is taking its place at the center of the world’s chessboard and it is a fair return of things.
